Important basic structures of Japanese language

Polite

Present positive	AはBです。A wa B desu.
Present negative	AはBではありません。A wa B dewa arimasen. (AはBじゃありません。A wa B ja arimasen.= a bit more casual)
Past positive	AはBでした。A wa B deshita.
Past negative	AはBではありませんでした。A wa B dewa arimasendeshita. (AはBじゃありませんでした。A wa B ja arimasendeshita.= a bit more casual)

Present positive	AはBです。A wa B desu.
Present negative	AはBではありません。A wa B dewa arimasen. (AはBじゃありません。A wa B ja arimasen.= a bit more casual)
Past positive	AはBでした。A wa B deshita.
Past negative	AはBではありませんでした。 A wa B dewa arimasendeshita. (AはBじゃありませんでした。A wa B ja arimasendeshita.= a bit more casual)

Casual

Present positive	AはB。A wa B.
Present negative	AはBじゃない。A wa B ja nai.
Past positive	AはBだった。A wa B datta.
Past negative	AはBじゃなかった。A wa B ja nakatta.

Present positive	AはB。A wa B.
Present negative	AはBじゃない。A wa B ja nai.
Past positive	AはBだった。A wa B datta.
Past negative	AはBじゃなかった。A wa B ja nakatta.

Example (Polite)

• これは　けいたいです。Kore wa keitai desu.=This is a cell-phone. (kore = this, keitai = cell-phone)
• これは　わたしのではありません。Kore wa watashi no dewa arimasen. = This is not mine. (watashi no = mine)
• きのうは　やすみでした。Kinou wa yasumi deshita. = Yesterday was day off. (kinou = yesterday, yasumi = day off; holiday; absent)
• きのうは　しごとではありませんでした。Kinou wa shigoto dewa arimasendeshita. = Yesterday was not work. Yesterday was off. (shigoto = work)

Example (Casual)

• これは　けいたい。Kore wa keitai.
• これは　わたしのじゃない。Kore wa watashi no janai.
• きのうは　やすみだった。Kinou wa yasumi datta.
• きのうは　しごとじゃなかった。Kinou wa shigoto ja nakatta.

*「は 」"wa" (topic marker) is often omitted in conversation.
